Disappointing start to the campaign for the Spanish Champions

It was pretty equal encounter between Athletico Madrid and FC Porto which rightfully ended in a draw. It was a drab display by the Spanish champions as they had only six attempts in total in the entire match compared to Porto’s five. The home side were saved by the VAR as they disallowed the visitors lead in the 80th minute for handling the ball by the Porto forward. Porto was reduced to 10 men deep in the extra time of the second half. All in all it was a faded display of football with a lot of physicality much to the characteristics of Athletico.

With Liverpool and Milan being the other two competitors in this group of death it will be even more difficult for Athletico to ensure knockout qualifications given they drew in their home game and that too to the weakest on paper team. But in football nothing is definite and the fun is just beginning. The group of death is now poised evenly with Liverpool and Milan will clash on the other fixture.

“Correa had to play, Luis arrived late, Griezmann has just arrived. So we have to stay calm and believe in what we’re doing.” Diego Simione quoted after the match.
