The whole world held their breath in aspiration and expectation as Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi lined up as starters for PSG against the group minnow Club Brugge FC. But nothing is guaranteed in football, and this was the case for this match. The Belgian side played with much valor and class, tormented PSG defense throughout the game registering a staggering 16 attempts against the French giants. Club Brugge earned a well deserving 1-1 draw and some would suggest they deserved all three points.
In the attacking front PSG was underwhelming, under par and unimaginative beyond recognition given the star studded squad. Mbappe assisted beautifully for Harrera in the 15th minute as PSG opened the scoring, but that was about it. It was all Club Brugge then, the Belgian champions kept the pressure on and moved swiftly on the counter. They equalized on 27th minute through the captain Hans Vanaken.
In the second half Mbappe was taken off due to an ankle injury, the severity of the injury is yet to know. Messi dropped dip several times to take charge as the midfield was out of sorts and missing Marco Verrati sincerely. Neymar tried to break lines with his dribbling but the resolute defending kept him at bay. PSG will need to step up their game a lot if they are to compete in Champions league given the competition all around. They are already marked as a potential winner and the pressure is on PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino as the team is designed to deliver. All eyes on PSG now as the rest of the competitors will know what this new PSG squad is all about.
“It requires time for them to shine together, it requires work. I had made it clear that we’re not a team yet. We have to work for this. We needed more consistency and more fluidity. We made too many mistakes. But despite all this I’m satisfied with the players. We have to keep calm and keep working.” Pochettino explained after match.
